A two-run homer by Jemile Weeks (Oakland) provided the winning margin as Phoenix beat Mesa 9-7 Friday. It was the second consecutive day the Solar Sox lost to first-place Phoenix. The loss drops Mesa to 3.5 games out of first with five games to play.
Bryan Petersen (Florida) went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples for Mesa. Steve Singleton was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the third inning. Chris Parmelee was 2-for-5 with a double. Rene Tosoni went 1-for-5 and drove in a run.
For Phoenix, Brad Emaus (Toronto) was 3-for-4 with a double. Grant Desme (Oakland) was 2-for-4 with a homer.
Spencer Steedley pitched two scoreless innings of relief, although he gave up three hits. Chris Province (Boston) was the losing pitcher. Justin Friend (Oakland) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the win, and Eddie Gamboa (Baltimore) worked a perfect ninth for the save.
Mesa travels to Peoria to play the Javelinas tonight.
