Cup of CoffeeOne night after the worst loss of the season, the Twins run out a September call up who wasn't even on the 40 man roster yesterday to make his major league debut against a division leader fighting the Twins for post season position. And they win. And people say this is a boring game. WGOM Map Add you today!2010 Prediction ContestSpreadsheet The third window is now open. This thing is huge and will require a global-wide effort. I hope the Nation rallies.
I also hope the inevitable charity tune is better than "We Are The World"...
heres hoping it's not quite as good as Kidney Now!
'Listen, when someone starts talking in the middle of a song, you know it's serious.'
One thing which has heartened me a bit is the free exposure the media is giving to various charities. Some online news stories even have links to major charities already operating on the ground in Haiti. Read the article, click the link, donate - couldn't be easier than that. Plenty of different organizations to choose from depending on one's religion or other affiliations. Hopefully having a donation box online (or the text 90999 method) helps bring in donations from folks who might not otherwise remember to stop by the Red Cross office with a check on their way home from work.
The text message thing is genius.
So far, the text message campaign has contributed $8 Million. Not too shabby America.
I just finished writing my first ever tax-free donation contract for the company that I am interning for. What was it? $100,000 for the Red Cross. DC is definitely stepping up.
I snuck into that Red Cross building while it was being built (the one on E Street and 20th) just to prove to my roommates that I could get on the roof of the building within 10 minutes.

Where would they have played in Apple Valley?
I'm guessing the MN Zoo.
That makes sense. I forgot about the zoo.
Yep. The show notes say they played in the zoo's Weesner Amphitheater.

I recently picked up Guitar Hero Legends of Rock on clearance at CVS, and one of the bonus songs is Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade." Tom Morello was also a bonus character.
Another song on the game: Weezer's "My Name is Jonas."
Now, I approve of any song with the name "Jonas" in the title, of course, but is Weezer really a "Legend of Rock" apropos of the game?
I'd probably pick on The Killers or AFI before Weezer, but I didn't really have a problem with any of the music in the game.
AFI? Really? I can see The Killers, if you consider 'Pop that vaguely sounds like Rock' as Rock.
Yeah, the Killers were sort of a shock. The music was pretty good overall though. I am slowly expanding my Guitar Hero stock.
More random soundtrack music as background in the home office…
“The World of the Dead II” – Joe Hisaishi, Princess Mononoke
“Gary’s Reserve” – Ensemble Studios, Age of Mythology
“Hello Ruth/The Last Crystal/The Venus Drug” – Fred Steiner, Star Trek TV Soundtrack, Volume I
“Nostalgia (Giuseppe Tornatore Suite: Cinema Paradiso)” – Ennio Morricone, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone
“Absinken/Eingeschlossen” – Klaus Doldinger, Das Boot (The Director’s Cut)
“Kookai Foundation” – Yasunori Mitsuda, Xenosaga Original Soundtrack
“Only the Beginning of the Adventure” – Harry Gregson-Williams, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
“(Fine Layers of) Slaysenflite” – Ensemble Studios, Age of Mythology
“Navarre and Marquet Duel” – Andrew Powell, Ladyhawke
“Jump Off” – John Powell, Jumper
Forgive me if I've mentioned this already, but have you head Creid? It's basically the Xenosaga music with almost celtic-ish arrangements. It doesn't really work as anything but background music, but it's not bad.
Creed?
no, I have not heard Creid, but I'll give it a spin - thanks
Thing I love about "We Are the World" is the cool diversity of voices, some of them paired up in interesting ways. And I guess Michael brought his own chorus effect with him to use, too.
I'm bummed that LaToya didn't get a solo.
Here's my travel break play list.
1. "Next in Line" - Nevermore, The Politics of Ecstasy
2. "Emerencia" - King Diamond, The Puppet Master
3. "Battle of Nevermore" - Morgana Lefay, Past Present Future
4. "Mind on Fire" - Kreator, Violent Revolution
5. "Multitude of Foes" - Nile, Black Seeds of Vengence
6. "In This River" - Black Label Society, Mafia
7. "Lucretia" - Megadeth, Rust in Peace
8. "Fly" - Blind Guardian, A Twist in the Myth
9. "These Three Things" - Type O Negative, Dead Again
10. "Chains of Misery" - Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark
I think when I was younger I might have had a Type O Negative album. Or maybe I just thought about buying one. You know, to look cool to the frightening kids.
I bought it because it came highly recommended by Pat Neshek.

Whatever happened to the Hives? Have they done anything since Veni Vidi Vicious?
I've heard some other stuff by them since, but VVV is the only album of theirs I have.
They came out with The Black and White Album in 2007. I enjoyed it simply because it was pretty much more of the same, I'm not sure what they're up to these days. They usually take about 3-4 years between CDs, it seems.
The moved to Australia and became The Vines? They sound the exact same to my ear.
Whatever happened to the Hives? Have they done anything since Veni Vidi Vicious?
They have put out 2 albums since VVV (Tyranasaurus Hives is a favorite of mine), and rumors are that they will put something out this year

Several times a year I get a hankering and watch "We Are the World." Of course, I also love the Northern Lights song, the heavy metal one (with Spinal Tap), "Do They Know It's Christmas Time," "Perfect Day" and pretty much any other song written to bring musicians together to help society. They're so cheesy and amazing.
Can you top Lionel Richie's thumbs up?
I don't know, it's pretty hard to top Bono's "Tonight, thank God it's them, instead of YOUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!eleven!!!1!"

7. First version of the band that became Ha Ha Tonka.
T. I thought the title had "Mother's," making the first-person plural either siblings, or connecting us all to the same mother (i.e. the earth). Now maybe it's about health care. Time for me to re-evaluate.
My brother-in-law (and his band - South by Sea) is opening for Ha Ha Tonka in St. Louis on Feb. 6. Unfortunately, my wife and I will be unable to attend, but he was impressed that I knew of Ha Ha Tonka.
The WGOM - artificially inflating my indie credibility since 2004.
Are they touring with HHT or just opening in StL? I'm bummed that the tour is skipping over MN. I guess the dozen or so that came out for their show in November didn't convince them that they had enough fans here (but, they were as openers for a 5pm open-time show).
If they had made it to Mpls, I was going to offer to buy a ticket for anyone here that could make it but needed convincing. Maybe next tour (which will probably be in 3-4 months).
It's just the one show, his band is all college students (himself included) so they can't go on any real tours whilst classes are going on.
Nine Days - "Wanna Be" [The Madding Crowd]
Billy Joel - "The Downeaster "Alexa" " [Storm Front]
Green Day - "¿Viva la Gloria? (Little Girl)" [21st Century Breakdown]

P.O.S. - Why Go (Pearl Jam Cover)
Ramona Falls - I Say Fever (Intuit)
Vampire Weekend - Cousins (Contra)³
Burial - Wounder (Burial)
Florence + the Machine - Dog Days are Over (Lungs)
¹ - I wasn't much for Yeasayer's first one, but their new album is very good. Sort of an 80's vibe to it, even though I'm not often a fan of 80's music, I like a lot of stuff that was inspired by the 80's.
² - Old school VGM (video game music) goodness. The game was hard as hell, though.
³ - A couple of listens in, and this is the only song that I'm really feeling. I enjoyed their first one well enough, but this one - as mentioned last week - is kind of 'meh'.
I'm kind of hoping you listened to 4'33" on noise-canceling headphones. Just because that would be deliciously ironic.
I've had it come up on my iPod when listening via noise-canceling headphones. The effect was kind of surreal, especially since it came up directly after 'Bleed' by Meshuggah. Silence has never seemed so.... silent.

Does anyone watch "American Idol" any more? I don't, but I'm told there was a young woman on last week named Mallorie Haley who did quite well and very favorably impressed the judges.
The reason I bring this up is that I once performed on the same bill as Mallorie Haley. This was in the late '90s, when she was still a kid. She grew up in Winner, South Dakota, and we were each singing at the South Dakota State Fair.
You could see even then that she had talent. I'm glad to hear that she's pursuing a musical career, and I hope she gets one.
I have been watching it. I've just been DVRing it and skimming it, and I don't remember her off the top of my head. I'll have to do a little research...
But the one guy that stood out was Larry Platt. At first, it's just another annoying joke audition, but then it was discovered that he was a huge Civil Rights figure in Atlanta. Props for giving him 15 minutes.
I just learned about him this morning.
more on Larry Platt
My wife and I watch Idol. I had no idea about the Larry Platt connection. That's actually very cool.
I haven't watched since I discovered it was not a reality show about Billy.
As an Idol-head, I can see her making the top 12...but not winning. That's just from the first audition.
Nice, uh, lungs. and from SoDak!
But what a terrible get up. Totally unflattering. Nice hair, though. I can totally see her being a pop star with a little work on her overall look.
You were looking at her hair? I didn't really notice that she had hair.
I am with Brian on that one. I didn't even know she sang!
If you click on that little triangle in the lower left hand corner, a video of her singing will play! The magic of technology!
:P
So, you're saying that she could go all Sinead O'Connor on you and you wouldn't notice? Riiiiight.
Not there, but I could explore Veejer
False equivalency alert! This woman is suggesting that she's nude! Our SD girl is wearing a dress that no woman who wants to appear sexy would wear!
"This woman"?? THIS WOMAN????!!!!
Good god, man. That's no mere woman. That's Lieutenant Ilia the vessel for Veejer.
Of course, she had taken an oath of celibacy before assuming her commission. Don't hate her because she's pretty.
[sidebar, Persis Khambatta died of a heart attack in 1998]

Thanks for posting this. I take it they'll be doing auditions for a while yet. If anyone hears about the next time she'll be on, I'd appreciate them letting me know.
You will want to tune in February 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th. That is the Hollywood Round, which will show a select number of the approximately 150 people that make it to Hollywood before they pare it down to 24 on the 17th. She stands a good chance of being featured since she was featured already.
I happened to catch about 5 minutes of Idol (first time, ever!) and this was the person that I saw. She's a beauty and has a pretty good voice. All four judges voted her onto the show.

Just bought the Spoon/Deerhunter tickets. Bought for the Saturday show so I can still go to both of the Twins exhibition games. I know where my priorities lie.
