I hear there's a big football game this weekend. Who's playing?

Gophers lead #7 Michigan State by 10 with 14 to play.

MSU wins the advertising battle, though.

So how about this for a You Choose:

    a. Vikings win tomorrow and go on to win Super Bowl. Joe Mauer plays out the year, then leaves for the Yankees.

    b. Joe Mauer signs 10-year extension with the Twins today. Vikings lose either tomorrow or in the Super Bowl in some excruciating fashion (a blowout tomorrow, a close loss in the SB, or whatever is most painful to you).

    Or here's another:

    a. Vikings lose either tomorrow or in the Super Bowl in some excruciating fashion (a blowout tomorrow, a close loss in the SB, or whatever is most painful to you).

    b. Vikings win the SB this year. Legislature promptly approves $1B of public money for a new Vikings stadium, meaning you'll pay for it for the next 30 years or so,

  • Is it game time yet? Man I need a distraction. Maybe I'll watch Game 163s.

So I happened across CBS' NFL Today this morning, and they had a talking head saying something that I thought insinuated that players in the NFL have to wait longer to become free agents than they did before. I believe he said that they have to wait 6 years to reach free agency. Do they have any kind of arbitration system before that?

What caught my attention was the talking head mentioning that there wouldn't be more than 5 or so desirable free agents under the age of 30. And that generally sounds like how things work in baseball, except that the guys straight from high school, like Mauer and A-Rod, can get a big payday from free agency in their mid-20s. I guess I also don't know when NFL players reach their prime.

    • sean

The Repository has some information about that. Also mentions why it's six years instead of four now.

      • ubelmann

That's pretty interesting in that a situation with restrictive free agency for years 3-5 and no unrestricted free agency until year 6, plus no salary cap, is pretty close to what MLB has.

    • DK

I think prime ages for NFL players differ by position. For example, I'd say most running backs are in their primes around age 25 and many of them are done by the time they're 30 (if not even earlier than that). On the other hand, I'd say most quarterbacks are in their primes in their late 20s or early 30s (unless you're Kurt Warner or the Gunslinger).

  • I hope the Twins totally smoke Ozzie, both at Target and at the Cell.

  • Few things are as annoying and artificial as the pre-game blather of a Fox Sports announcing team.

I picked up a six pack of Summit Winter Ale for good luck for the game today. Solid brew. Not spectacular, and maybe a little weaker tasting than I like in a winter warmer, but tasty nonetheless.

I could care less about futbol, but this is heartbreaking. Also, it turns out that Mr. Favre is really 40 years old.

  • Possession is 9/10ths of the offense.

  • Did Joe Buck just say the Metrodome has hosted four Super Bowls?

  • I'm gonna pretend Longwell just missed a 47 yard field goal.

  • Who's our designated coin flip expert? Send out Kleinsasser!

  • We need Bobby Keppel

  • Wow...that wasn't pass interference...he didn't touch him. He just fell down.

  • Here we go...my voodoo Hartley doll is coming in handy right about now...

  • sean

So, has their kicker not missed one yet all season?

The Vikings absolutely should have won that game earlier. But no one can tell me that they still didn't get absolutely raped by the zebras there.

    • As a Packers fan who is still sick to his stomach here when I see Favre in purple, I still think the Vikings got completely jobbed by the refs in OT. Chili's strategery of playing for a 50+ yard field goal was dumb, too, but that PI call & trapped catch (and the extremely generous spot on Thomas's 4th and 1 run) really doomed the Vikes in the extra period thanks to the miserable OT rules.

Colts are going to absolutely destroy the Saints. 45-17.

      • cheaptoy

They'd better. I refuse to watch the SB now, but the Colts had still better stomp Goodell and the Saints.

(I don't want to totally blame Favre, because they'd bever even be in the NFC Champ without him. But, dammit man, Shiancoe was wide open on the sideline for a 6 yard game winning gain.)

        • He should've just pulled the ball down and ran. But really, that stupid 12 men in the huddle penalty was really, really brutal. They should've called a draw there. If you're playing for they 50 yarder, at least do it from the middle of the field.

I don't know if I could've handled watching Favre win the Super Bowl for another team, but the game ending the way it did is pretty similar to the Packers game which I was sick to my stomach for a week over, so I really, sympathize for you all.

I would have had a totally different tone about the loss if the officiating didn't turn to shit. But, this seems almost harder to take than 1998 (mostly because I'm older) due to that.

I do thank you for your sympathy though. Its so much better than the other Packer fans I know who are saying the Vikings never should have signed him in the first place.

            • I've never been one to gloat or rub it in about any team I cheer for, and there's a very small number of teams I actively root against (Cowboys, Yankees basically), so I don't really take pleasure in this. Heck, if I was a Saints fan and my team won on such dubious terms I wouldn't take any pleasure in it. It's too bad the officials decided such a good game.

I normally do not advocate going for long field goals to win a game (40 and it..go for it. Otherwise go for a TD or better FG range), but I sort of agree with Chilly on that one. Try to kill the clock so the WhoDats do not get the ball back (even with the defense playing stellar) and take the chances with a long figgie

The refs didnt job the Vikes, the Vikings jobbed themselves with not being able to hang onto the ball. But I'll give the WhoDats credit, they were ferocious with the ball hawking.

I should be crushed, but I'm not. it was a great game, and at least we did not lose to the Cowboys. I'll be cheering for the WhoDats in the Super Bowl

      • cheaptoy

I don't disagree with the play calling at the end. I just wish Favre would have seen Shank standing over there on the sideline, all lonely.

But I just can't agree that the Vikings didn't get jobbed by bad officiating. Pierre Thomas fumbled on that 4th and short, and ended up short of the first down marker when he got it back, there wasn't PI on that PI call on Leber, and that wasn't a catch.

Basically, the Vikings turned it over 5 times in regulation, and it was still tied. So the Saints certainly didn't "deserve" to win any more than the Vikings did and the Vikings didn't give up the game despite not being able to hang onto the ball.

      • Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking time off the clock, but I think they were wasting too much time. I thought they should've milked the clock, got down to the 20 yard line, and kicked the field goal from there. But they were there letting the playclock wind down, and that's why I have issue with the playcalling at the end of the game.

I've always liked watching Manning play football, so I'm going to root for the Colts. This was reaffirmed for me watching the Saints make dirty late hit after dirty late hit on Favre. If that's your game plan against Manning, good luck with that.

    Great game. Classic, vintage Favre.

    • brianS

what DK said. Totally predictable. Favre being Favre leads either to Favre as the hero or Favre as the goat. Good thing I like chevre.

      • cheaptoy

But Favre not being on the team leads to either no playoffs, or not making it out of the first round.

  • Didn't somebody say this season could only end one way? It just did.

  • brianS

On the bright side, this game was Terrible :-)

  • SBG

Yep, Favre made a bad decision on that last play. But, how about AP putting the ball on the carpet three times. Vikes should have won by three TDs. Their defense was terrific in the second half. And Favre got the shit kicked out of him but still threw for over 300 yards.

I think this was worse than the '98 NFC title game. Just a heartbreaking loss. And Favre making almost no bad plays all year until his final throw -- which turned out to be a total dog. God damn, that's just ridiculous. Who's writing this script?

    Jesus hates the Vikings!

  • brianS

cc to Carterhayes: did you fix your double-billing for Feb 1??

    • When did you last see it? There's only one post listed now, but I did change a couple things around last week.

Edit: Ok, I found it. For some reason it didn't show up when I sorted the February posts, so thanks for catching that. I moved one back to 29 March for now, though I'll probably change the video. I'm designating that date as the conclusion of my initial run. I'm happy to stay on, but I don't want to monopolize Mondays, either.
