Let's see, the Twins took Pavano over Washburn... signed Jim Thome and Orlando Hudson... no Tony Batista, no Livan Hernandez... and the Mauer deal is imminent? We're one Hinske signing from perfection.
Break out the white shoes, boys.

Nice ELO, 'wig. Is that your inner connoisseur of a certain type of '70s rock act showing? ;-)
The 'Trane is part of a 6-disc bootleg set, all recorded in the autumn of 1961. Must have been a European tour, because the notes indicated they were recorded at shows in Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, Copenhagen, and Helsinki. The lineup is the Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and Elvin Jones model. Considering the era the recordings are pretty good, though they're not soundboards.
Which version of Gould's Goldbergs do you have?
OK, I have some of those Trane shows on tape, but I may have to look for a download so I can have digital copies.
I checked out the A New World Record from the library and liked it well enough to put it on the iPod. "Telephone Line" is the highlight cut, for me. Honestly, I didn't care for Face the Music so much. I'm still waiting for the library to deliver Out of the Blue.
I have the 1955 Goldberg Variations, and listen to it often, particularly when I need some music to help me relax or think. Years ago, I heard the later version, but don't recall specific differences very well. It's slower in places, yeah? Do you prefer one over the other?
Yup, the 1981 recording is slower and has the atmosphere of artistic maturity about it. It's also in stereo, which changes the feel a bit. I only have the 1955 recording in my collection right now, though that's more of an oversight on my part than anything else. Like you, I listen to it frequently, particularly when I'm writing papers. There's something about the piece that is wonderful for the thought process.
I like Keith Jarrett's harpsichord recording of the Goldbergs, too. They're nothing particularly special compared to the Goulds and some, but I like it when artists stretch beyond their artistic base. I understand there's a accordion recording of the variations out there as well, which intrigues me.
Face the Music was the album which introduced me to ELO, so I'm a little partial to it. That said, I agree that A New World Record is the better album, and "Telephone Line" is a pretty great song ("Livin' Thing" and "Shangri-La" are pretty good, too). Rhu_Ru's context of Out of the Blue as a great road trip album is spot-on, I think. My guess is ELO fans are the only ones who would listen to the entire record at home, but something transformative happens in the car and the album really melts away the miles. After you get done with that, I'd suggest checking out Eldorado, which is really the first time Lynne got the sound he wanted. It's a concept album, so you'll have to be prepared for that, but it's still pretty darn good. All that said, I'm glad you're finding a couple things you like among their repertoire!
Edit: If you can't find the rest of those 'Trane shows, let me know. I have them as flac files and could easily pass along a copy of what you don't have.
There seems to be a lot of online postings of that Trane set, so I think I'm good. Thank you.
If you occasionally like an eclectic/offbeat interpretation of classical music, you might want to check out Uri Caine's Goldberg Variations. He does 70 variations, each with a unique instrumentation and approach, from the ridiculous to the sublime. I also like Jacques Loussier's jazz piano trio arrangement of the piece.
I've meant to check out Jarrett's classical recordings for a long time, but never got around to it. Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to move those up the to-do list.
I do enjoy the unconventional (or is it eccentric?) on occasion, so both the Caine and the Loussier are going on my list. Thanks for the suggestion.
that is a great list, 'wig.
Gould played Bach piano concertos better than anyone. Hell, just ask Rhu_Ru.
Sure, if Top 40 piano players are your thing.
That's hilarious. Finzi? You want to play Finzi? NO GOULD FOR YOU!!!!

though he might not be the most deserving, harper holds my record for most live concerts seen (5 or 6, i believe). he's one of those that i was able to see at first ave a couple times before everyone realized he's quite talented.
(one quick note: i remember one of the shows, he stepped in front of the mic, quieted everyone down, and sang directly to the crowd. don't think he'll be able to pull that off again.)
Andrew, are you a fan of the Eels? I own about 5 tracks that were free downloads (Manchester ep?). I enjoy them but wouldn't know where to start with their actual albums, do you have any suggestions?
This is actually the only Eels song I have, so I don't think I'll be much help. Sorry meat.
Meat, if you like the stuff with strings stick with the albums that are string based. Shootenany, Souljacker, maybe not for you. Their live albums are usually pretty stellar though.
I lost interest in them whenever Shootenany! came out, but I quite enjoyed the first four.
I think Electro-Shock Blues is the most critically acclaimed, but it's also quite depressing in parts.
I think I most prefer Daisies of the Galaxy, which has personal faves "I Like Birds" and "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues" (unlisted bonus track).
Actually, I think I'd prefer a compilation of the 4 best tracks from each of the first four albums. The first 15 tracks of the compilation Meet the Eels looks to be close to that.
I agree with just about everything AMR said.
I like Blinking Lights but it is also depressing.
I always thought that was one of their more uplifting albums.
That's the double album? I tried to get through it, and just couldn't make it. Nothing stood out to me, so I gave up. It was via download right after I got caught up in the whole pirating thing, and I finally had access to Underworld remixes and Japanese experimental techno (Ryoji Ikeda, Riow Arai, Nobukazu Takemura), so my attention wasn't really on it. I bought the first five physically. I also have the two albums credited to "E"... they're not as good.
I will also recommend some of the b-sides from the first two albums. "Manchester Girl" is very good (originally on an E album).
I always thought that was one of their more uplifting albums.
After I read up on E's background, a song like Suicide Life is pretty darn depressing. There are some tracks that are a little happier than most Eels but it's hard for me to get past that song.

Deep Purple! I totally had that record at one point. Finally!
I knew, when I saw that song today, that I would be able to make a connection with someone on here.
waitaminnit. There is no way you are old enough to know what a "record" is, Buffalo. I don't belieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve you.
It was less expensive than buying the mp3.
including the record player to play it on???
I am not an orphan.
You play records in your mom's basement??
You found me out.
What kind of turntable does your mom have?
In his defense, sometimes the older people we youngins' know clean the junk out of their basement and find old records that they give to us. That's why I own one record, that of Slayer's Show No Mercy.
To me, a "record" is any kind of recording, and an "album" isn't necessarily a vinyl LP, either.
I agree with FW. "Album" is a long-player in any format. I'll say "on vinyl" or "LP" or "twelve-inch" to separate that format. (Although the 12" is only for singles or EPs pressed on the same-sized piece of plastic as an LP.)
I only use "CD" for that format, regardless of if it's a single or album.
I think I may have stopped using "record" completely because it's vague.
Dio, Queensryche, Deep Purple, Metallica!
Who are you and what have you done with Cheaptoy?!
I have a healthy respect for the classical compositions of metal's past.
In other words, you celebrate the Sabbath.
Indeed, at the Metal Church.

Our DJs should play some Smothers Brothers sometime.

Doc, I've found your theme song, "I Drink Beer", off Dan Reeder's Sweetheart
I drink beer to improve my mind
end all war, help mankind through these dark and trying times
hey batter batter batter, hey batter hey
swing batter swing, hey swing away
swing for the fence, live for the day
Awesome. That could be the WGOM theme song!
Is there a way we can elect a standardized format for music Friday lists? I have always posted mine as Band-Song-Album. I have noticed that most people post theirs as Song-Band-Album, which I have always found confusing as I look for the band first. What do other people prefer? Would y'all rather I did Song-Band-Album as well? I'll try it out today.
Voodoo Train - The BellRays - The Red White & Black
Your Southern Can Is Mine - The White Stripes - De Stijl
Eighty-8 - Brother Ali - Rites of Passage
Yes 'Em to Death - The Coup - Pick a Bigger Weapon
Woman Tonight - Felt - Felt 2 (A Tribute to Lisa Bonet)
Take Warning - Operation Ivy - Energy
I Am a Rock - Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits
Brother With An Ego - Cody Chesnutt - The Headphone Masterpiece
Do You Realize?? - The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Parade - Pretty Girls Make Graves - Elan Vital
Does it really matter? I guess we're talking about 10 random songs, so I assume the song title would be first then, but then that doesn't necessarily make it half-baked.
Have we discussed how much we enjoy Cody Chesnutt yet? I feel like we have but I might be wrong.
I like 'song' - band - album, with song being in ' or "
Just to mess with you I'm gonna go Album-Year-Band-Song-Record Label
I like band first, because that way I can scan to see if it's a band I know and decide to read from there. If it's a band I've never heard of, reading a song title does nothing for me.
I can see the logic in doing band first.
I never do album, because I rarely listen to albums anymore and a lot of songs are on multiple albums anyway.
iTunes lists Song-Band-Album, hence my order.
I prefer reading Band - "Song" - (Album, if listed), but my list begins with the song if I'm cutting & pasting from iTunes.
You can move around the columns in iTunes.
re: "Celebration"
Man, that song annoys me to no end. Let's 'Celebrate' with Three Dog Night instead!
Man, Three Dog Night annoys me to no end. "I Just Want to Celebrate" with Rare Earth, instead!

* I am not a huge Wilco fan (gasp!), but I do love this song. A lot.
The ashtray says
You were up all night
When you went to bed
With your darkest mind
Your pillow wept
You covered your eyes
And you finally slept
While the sun caught fire
That may be one of my favorite opening verses in music.
1. TV Ghost - "Paradigm" from Cold Fish
2. The Wrens - "Hats Off to Marriage, Baby" from Secaucus
3. Gucci Mane - "Bachelor Bad" from The Cold War: Guccimerica

9. Fire on Fire - "Grin" from The Orchard
10. Ink & Dagger - "The Road to Hell" from Drive this Seven Inch Wooden Stake Through my Philadelphia Heart
I cannot identify a single one of these bands. Huh.
Well, if you want to learn more about Gucci Mane (and God help you if you do) he has about 50,000 mixtapes to choose from.
BURR! His stuff from this year, at least, is pretty uniformly fun. Unfortunately he got his dumb ass thrown back in jail after 4 months on the outside. But in that 4 months he put out like 8 mixtapes plus a full length. He's got an impressive work ethic, if nothing else.
How does he find time to break laws with that kind of productivity?
(Not knowing what he's in jail for, I'm guessing that he probably could be in possession of narcotics and firearms while in the recording studio. Firearms prohibition is often a condition of parole, right?)
I like that Wrens record (and it's follow-up, Meadowlands.) The other 9 bands? I'm with Walt.
UGK is Underground Kings, a Houston rap duo, Bun B and Pimp C.
Probably most famous for each taking a verse on Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'"
Pimp C is now dead. (Drug overdose.)
I once read an interview with Bun B in The Believer, a literary magazine published by Dave Eggars. It was the most incongruous juxtaposition I had ever seen.
Coincidentally, UGK is also my favorite rap group/duo ever. Luckily Bun B's solo stuff is top notch as well so I at least get a little of that in my life still!
Hence the fantasy football name. I never claimed to be smart.
Having grown tired of my Pandora feed, I decided to move to Slacker.
Iron & Wine - Naked As We Came
Cold War Kids - Hospital Beds
Green Day - American Idiot
Bloc Party - Mercury
Band of Horses - Marry Song
Spoon - The Book I Write
The Killers - Dustland Fairytale

The Devil Walks, Roma Di Luna, Find Your Way Home
Fraternity Blues, Townes Van Zandt, Live at the Old Quarter
Bonus: Quincy Punk Episode, Spoon, A Series of Sneaks
Now that is one WGOM-influenced list.
This might be the pandora station if all the songs from these lists are plugged in.
Lifter Puller's Fiestas & Fiascos is in Amazon's $5 MP3 downloads this month. Being the Hold Steady fan that I am, is this a good Lifter Puller album to get started on them?
