Mexico scored two in the fourth to get back into the game, but Michael Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the game away for Puerto Rico. Luis Figueroa had three hits and scored once, while Jesus Feliciano (Mets) and Miguel Abreu (Baltimore) each had two hits including a double. In the seventh, the first two batters struck out, but a pair of walks and a single tied the score and put runners on first and third. At that point the runner on third, Freddy Guzman, executed a straight steal of home to put the Dominican Republic ahead 3-2, a lead which held up the rest of the game.
