Just one man's opinion, but Johnny Cash >> >> >> >> >> The Dixie Chicks + Keith Urban + Tricia Yearwood (Deana Carter's presence in both the seeds and the list cancels her out, not that it would matter)
100% agreed.
by the way, "i'm leavin' now" is one of my favorite songs from the whole american recordings.
Have you heard American VI yet?
not yet, and i'm debating if i want to. v really didn't do much for me, and if that was a posthumous release, i can't imagine that vi had better luck scrapping the barrel. have you checked it out yet?
Yeah, I pre-ordered it on Amazon. Honestly, I think it's pretty good, but I also liked American V. There's some really strong material on it, and without knowing what didn't work for you on the previous album, I can at least offer this - Johnny's vocals could stand on their own without any of the backing music. That said, whatever wasn't added to the recordings before he passed has been added with a great deal of care following his death. I think Rick Rubin went to great pains to be respectful of Johnny's legacy as a recording artist, and if the last track on the album doesn't choke a listener up, that person's heart is made of coal.
I also pre-ordered it on Amazon and the tracking says I will get it tomorrow (with MLB10 The show!).
I like American 5, even more so than 4. From what I have heard on the radio, AR6 is going to be a very stark, very respectful album. I can't wait to hear it in its entirety.
Also I have made this offer before, but I did write a 2000+ word review of AR 1-4. Let me know if you want to see it, I'll e-mail it to you.
I bought the mp3 version on sale from Amazon and I have to say that it's definitely a solid record. I'm not sure how much regular play it'll get at my house, but it'll be nice when I'm in the mood for something a little different.
free, I'd love to see it. I did a review of American V a good while back, and now that I have the last installment I'd really like to relisten to the entire American series.
You can mail the review to detlef dot schrempf c/o Gmail.
detlef schrempf is your google name? Sweet. I'm sending it now.
Agreed, but I still like. But that is the absolute worst Dixie Chicks song.

Pandora giving me quite the Bal'mer run from 6-9.
Also, it pleases me that Radio Station WGOM this week features two tunes from cheaptoy as seedlings with the result of the Dixie Chicks.
As someone who hasn't gotten around to using Pandora, I think this would be a good opportunity to get an explanation on what a "seed" is. My guess is we're talking about bands representing styles of music from which Pandora will use to create a list?
You can either seed with a band(s) or a song(s), and Pandora will tailor a "station" with music that fits various categories from its music "genome" that are similar to the seed.
Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured in order for the Dixie Chicks to be funny based on using my music for seeds.
Although I would not label it as such, the genre listing for Romantica on iTunes is "Country," so my selection may have contributed to the DC's appearance.
Pandora does more than select by genre; it selects by dozens of criteria like major/minor key, straight 4/mixed meter, electric/acoustic instrumentation, brass or strings vs. none, solo voice/multiple harmonies, etc. If you choose "Menu" on a song that is playing, and then pick "Why was this song selected?", you can see the reasoning that Pandora used to select a particular song.
I haven't seen a real explanation of how they do it, ct. You input a set of artists/songs that you like and then the thing just starts spitting out songs. You can add additional artists/songs, but I don't know how they figure into the subsequent song selection.
After number 10, the music got decidedly harder, but not, I don't think, in the vein of what cheaptoy listens to.
Mindless Child of Motherhood -- The Kinks
Never Let Go -- Tom Waits
Slipping (Into Something) -- The Feelies
My Uptight Life -- Teenage Fanclub
You Must Be A Witch -- The Lollypop Shoppe
Take Me! -- The Wedding Present
From a Motel 6 -- Yo La Tengo
Down By The River -- Neil Young
Season of the Shark -- Yo La Tengo
Car Song -- Woodie Guthrie
Bonus: Where there is Smoke, There is Fire -- Urban Guerrillas
I was listening to "Down By The River," from the Archives set, just this morning. Possibly the most unlikely sing-along song ever, yet it's hard to resist joining in on the chorus. I tend to get caught up in that song, anyway.
A couple odd coincidences in this week's list, in light of conversations last week.
"First Klass (C'mon Home)" - Johnny Hodges
"The Big Ship" - Brian Eno
"Big Boys" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
"Palladium" - Tamba 4
"Sugar Lump" - Walt Dickerson, Relativity
"Go Ahead John (Part Two B)" - Miles Davis, The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions
"Honky Tonk Women" - The Rolling Stones, Live'r Than You'll Ever Be
"Venus And Mars" - Wings
"Motel (Diner Au Motel)" - Miles Davis, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud
"Get Up (I feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" - James Brown, Love Power Peace - Live at the Olympia, Paris 1971
Here's a bonus video for the Zooey fans in the Nation:
ENO!
Time for some pre-Spring Training trip soundtrack music:
“Escaping Nomanisan” – Michael Giacchino, The Incredibles
“Suite from Forrest Gump” – Alan Silvestri, Forrest Gump Original Soundtrack
“Night Fight” – Tan Dun, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
“The Wooing of Catherine” – Patrick Doyle, Henry V
“Ending Titles” – Wendy Carlos, Tron Soundtrack
“Harappa” – E.S. Posthumus, Unearthed
“Take His Toes” – Stephen Rippy, Kevin McMullan, David Rippy, Age of Empires III Original Soundtrack
“Bishop’s Death” – Andrew Powell, Ladyhawke
“No Vacancy (Venture Bros Theme)” – JG Thirlwell, The Venture Bros: The Music of JG Thirlwell
“Paradise Lost” – Joe Hisaishi, Laputa: The Castle in the Sky
TGIF folks!
Bonus: a friend in the Twin Cities posted this on Facebook, and I got a huge laugh from it. It's a Journey/Metallica mashup called "Don't Stop the Sandman" by Rock Sugar, an over-the-top derivative of MTV '80s music at its "finest"
"Enter Sandman" is 1991. I still hold a soft spot for that album, and what it was in my life, so it pains me to se it labelled as "'80s music."
Make that "20th Century Music". It all blurs together eventually. It's the video that really gave me a laugh, though.
Interpol – “Mammoth”
Spoon – “The Way We Get By”
Delta Spirit – “Ode To Sunshine”
Modest Mouse – “Missed the Boat”
White Rabbits – “The Plot”
Vampire Weekend – “Exit Music (for a Film)”
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – “Clap Your Hands!”
Ra Ra Riot – “A Manner to Act”
Kings of Leon – “Closer”
Cold War Kids – “Avalanche In B”
I like the WGOM radio list. Strange so much country popped up in the list this week though.
I have list envy.
Pass the Mic - Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
I know There's An Answer- The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Last Nite - The Strokes - Is This It?
The Sparrow - A Hawk And A Hacksaw - The Way The Wind Blows
Fling - Built To Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love
Make Up Your Mind - Parasites - Pair
Going Away - The Innocence Mission - Birds Of My Neighborhood
Giant Steps - John Coltrane - Giant Steps
I Held Her In My Arms - Violent Femmes - Add It Up
Forbidden City - Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Rock Art & THe X-Ray Style
11. Forward To Death - Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
That list is not country. I couldn't resist #11, Cheaptoy isn't the only one who can bring teh Death
Clearly, that song was about March 5th's WGOM music post.

He was a decent jungle ("drum and bass") artist from the late 90's. But such an awful recording name. Would have worked for a British-style male pop group (a "boy band") or a Riot Grrrl band.
Geto? I mean, just how good DOES it feel to be a gangsta?
The Beasties, yo.
Beach
Beach, though my younger self has to give a shout to The Dead ___.
Wow, y'all got a lot of mileage out of that.
Moss leans towards Newsboys, in fact, over Beastie or Beach (or Pet Shop). But they all have their place.
Any mention of "Giant Steps" merits a link to this.
That is pretty cool, thanks for the link.

You owe it to youself to check out the Kidz Bop version of "Float On" if you haven't yet.
aaaah. that does it. the P and T keys are much too close.
Wow. That was awfully annoying.
I hate kids.
