Wow, y'all got a lot of mileage out of that.

Moss leans towards Newsboys, in fact, over Beastie or Beach (or Pet Shop). But they all have their place.

I was listening to "Down By The River," from the Archives set, just this morning. Possibly the most unlikely sing-along song ever, yet it's hard to resist joining in on the chorus. I tend to get caught up in that song, anyway.

A couple odd coincidences in this week's list, in light of conversations last week.

"First Klass (C'mon Home)" - Johnny Hodges
"The Big Ship" - Brian Eno
"Big Boys" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions
"Palladium" - Tamba 4
"Sugar Lump" - Walt Dickerson, Relativity

"Go Ahead John (Part Two B)" - Miles Davis, The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions
"Honky Tonk Women" - The Rolling Stones, Live'r Than You'll Ever Be
"Venus And Mars" - Wings
"Motel (Diner Au Motel)" - Miles Davis, Ascenseur Pour L'Échafaud
"Get Up (I feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" - James Brown, Love Power Peace - Live at the Olympia, Paris 1971

Double Strokes? Double GNFTWLBN? After a quick google search, people don't refer to that album as GNFTWLBN? Its so catchy.

CAKE - Satan is my Motor
The Strokes - Heart In a Cage
Modest Mouse - Float On
Coldplay - Shiver
The Strokes - Alone, Together
Nada Surf - Happy Kid
Phantom Planet - 1st Things 1st
Modest Mouse - World at Large
Bloc Party - Helicopter
The Futureheads - The City Is Here For You To Use

Bonus: Spoon visited Letterman last night, performing Got Nuffin.

Anyone else going to see them at 1st Ave? I'm going to the Saturday show as to not miss either of the Twins exhibition games.

Boymerang?
He was a decent jungle ("drum and bass") artist from the late 90's. But such an awful recording name. Would have worked for a British-style male pop group (a "boy band") or a Riot Grrrl band.

I bought the mp3 version on sale from Amazon and I have to say that it's definitely a solid record. I'm not sure how much regular play it'll get at my house, but it'll be nice when I'm in the mood for something a little different.

Pandora does more than select by genre; it selects by dozens of criteria like major/minor key, straight 4/mixed meter, electric/acoustic instrumentation, brass or strings vs. none, solo voice/multiple harmonies, etc. If you choose "Menu" on a song that is playing, and then pick "Why was this song selected?", you can see the reasoning that Pandora used to select a particular song.

**What the hell did I do to Pandora, anyway??

At least I finished strong.

Although I would not label it as such, the genre listing for Romantica on iTunes is "Country," so my selection may have contributed to the DC's appearance.

I also pre-ordered it on Amazon and the tracking says I will get it tomorrow (with MLB10 The show!).

I like American 5, even more so than 4. From what I have heard on the radio, AR6 is going to be a very stark, very respectful album. I can't wait to hear it in its entirety.

Also I have made this offer before, but I did write a 2000+ word review of AR 1-4. Let me know if you want to see it, I'll e-mail it to you.

I haven't seen a real explanation of how they do it, ct. You input a set of artists/songs that you like and then the thing just starts spitting out songs. You can add additional artists/songs, but I don't know how they figure into the subsequent song selection.

You can either seed with a band(s) or a song(s), and Pandora will tailor a "station" with music that fits various categories from its music "genome" that are similar to the seed.

Yeah, I pre-ordered it on Amazon. Honestly, I think it's pretty good, but I also liked American V. There's some really strong material on it, and without knowing what didn't work for you on the previous album, I can at least offer this - Johnny's vocals could stand on their own without any of the backing music. That said, whatever wasn't added to the recordings before he passed has been added with a great deal of care following his death. I think Rick Rubin went to great pains to be respectful of Johnny's legacy as a recording artist, and if the last track on the album doesn't choke a listener up, that person's heart is made of coal.

not yet, and i'm debating if i want to. v really didn't do much for me, and if that was a posthumous release, i can't imagine that vi had better luck scrapping the barrel. have you checked it out yet?

For the past week, I decided to listen to my iPod straight through, alphabetically by song. That's kindof random, right? Here's where I am...

1. Primal Scream "Higher than the Sun (American Spring Remix by Andrew Weatherall)" Higher Than the Sun EP
2. Julianna Barwick "The Highest" Florine
3. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy "His Hands" Little Lost Blues
4. Candi Staton "His Hands" His Hands*
5. The Sugarcubes "Hit" Stick Around for Joy

6. Scott H. Biram "Hit the Road" Dirty Old One Man Band
7. Seefeel "Hive" (Ch-Vox)
8. Ha Ha Tonka "Hold My Feet the the Fire (Live)" Daytrotter Session, 10/23/09
(Then three more versions of the same song)
9. Retribution Gospel Choir "Holes in Our Heads" Retribution Gospel Choir
T. Vampire Weekend "Holiday" Contra

*Yes, a cover of a limited-release Will Oldham song was the title track of the 2006 album from the voice of "Young Hearts, Run Free"

As someone who hasn't gotten around to using Pandora, I think this would be a good opportunity to get an explanation on what a "seed" is. My guess is we're talking about bands representing styles of music from which Pandora will use to create a list?
