Does anyone buy stereo equipment anymore? Or is our music experience almost completely limited to the iPod experience? I have some old stereo equipment collecting dust, but I also don't use an MP3 player.

i had a full component stereo system, but it was also starting to collect dust. amp, equalizer, cd, tape, record player, and some real decent speakers i picked up real cheap. when the wife and i made the move from winona to chi-town, that was one of the things "we" had to get rid of. i miss that thing. inherited it from my dad, grew up with it, it followed me through all my apartments, provided with some good tunes for good times. *sigh*

I've still got the same five speaker system (haven't been able to afford a sub-woofer yet) and ridiculously long lasting Yamaha receiver that I've had since college. Of course, I rarely play music on it, since its mainly for movies and gaming. My main musical listening experience comes in my car. The one I recently bought still has the factory speakers, but they're the better factory speakers that VW puts out. Someday I hope to have the money to waste on better ones. (no subs though, learned my lesson on those.)

Hey Algonad, same UT album, different song.
Lucky Old Sun is a great little song. I especially enjoy Ray Charles' version. I'll have to find the Johnny Cash version for a listen.
Maybe if you weren't such a Dope-Smoking Moron, you could find a God Damn Job. I better Go now. I'm starting to Stink.

I have an old 3 CD changer, 4-speaker setup that I recently installed in the basement. It's great for listening to Twins games and CD's and okay for movies/games. I predominantly use the good ol' iPod, though.

T. Dub Colossus "Negus Dub" Return to Addis EP
*I'm getting bored with the two Burial albums. I did not expect that, I thought they were so fantastic when they came out.
**Mylo basically remixed Judie Tzuke's "Stay with Me till Dawn" and called it his own.
Burial goes in stages for me, I just wish there was a little more material out there that sounded like it (particularly Untrue).
Kode9 & Spaceape "Memories of the Future" is a bit more muscular than Burial, but more atmospheric than most of the other dubstep I've heard. (Zomby, the Bug, MRK1).
The Lata EP by Blackdown fits in nicely, too.
Listened to a little bit of 'Memories of the Future'. Liked it better than what I've heard of Burial, but I felt like my coolness quotient wasn't quite high enough for it.
Thanks a lot, I'll check those out right away. I'll admit my knowledge of that whole "scene" is next to nonexistant.
Try the vocal album "The World Is Gone" by Various. It's like a Portishead with dubstep instead of trip-hop.
But it draws a bit more from British Folk so that while using the sound of urban south London, it's more bucolic than Portishead.
Last song of the day at the office:
Ministry "No W" Rock Against Bush
Nice bookends there.
Ministry sound so much better when there's a Bush in the White House to sample from.

I haven't gotten around to setting up the stereo system since we moved back here from Chicago ... nearly three years ago.
Heh. We are ten years and counting since moving from Champaign. Speakers, receiver, CD player all still packed and stored in a closet.
Wow, that's three from March 16-20, 1992.
UT must be taking the place of Big Star this week.
I love The xx's album. But when given the chance to see them live, I had to pass. Seems like it would be quite the bore.
From live clips that I've seen, I think I would agree. The album took some getting used to, but it ended up being one of my favorites, but yeah... I don't think that it would translate very well into a live show.
I agree with both sentiments, but I read somewhere that they were actually a fantastic live show. So I looked into when they might be coming to town. As you probably know, their show at the Varsity is sold out, but there are tickets on Stubhub, where $15 tickets are going for $60-95. So, yeah, no.
Oh yeah. I saw that. Of course, I was deciding whether to go when tickets were still $15

as a bonus, to try to come to terms with the departure of my favorite contestant, a video from Alex Lambert who was unceremoniously dumped by America last night.
If he had a better haircut, he'd still be on.
Or if he had ever performed in front of a group of more than 5 people before. Oh well.
Do they allow re-contestants? I know they allow people dumped from tryouts and Hollywood week to come back. I think A_Lambert_2 could work on performing over the year and come back ready to set America's hearts on fire in 2011.
Pretty sure they do not. Once you make the semifinals you are ineligible to audition ever again.
That's about 5 too many...

Once I get a little more established (and out of a studio apartment) I'd like to get a nice, large sound system, but for now I'm pretty reliant on the iPod and a small single-CD player.

At home, it's an iMac with Bose speakers. At the studio, a 5(?) year-old Sony single disc boom box. Can't believe that thing hasn't conked out from all it's (ab)use. My iPod is never too far from reach. I've got a crappy little faux retro turntable that I might play an old scratchy 33 on from time to time, but these days it's more for show.

Something like one of those Crosley jobs that combines a turntable with a radio and a CD/cassette deck? Mrs. CH has one of those, and I think she wondered why I bought a real turntable just to play the old jazz records I pick up occasionally. I didn't get anything fancy - just an early-Eighties Technics in the original box that I won for $70 on eBay - but I figure if the records I buy have lasted this long I should probably play them on something nicer than that Crosley. Of course, the stupid Pioneer receiver I bought twelve years ago didn't come with a pre-amp, so I had to buy that, too...

Yep, though mine's an Emerson. It's decidedly lo-tech, but certain records still sound pretty darn good on it. Two for example, Neil's Tonight's The Night and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos Carnegie Hall Concert. (Last two I listened to.) It's real value has been as the AM radio that I listen to Dazz & Gordo with.
That's what I use our Crosley for, too, though it's Bob Uecker country out here. Nothing quite like listening to a baseball game over AM radio in the summertime.
I still listen to music mostly on the living room component system w/ the big Cerwin-Vega! speakers, or in the car. However, the tape deck died last year and may never get replaced. Lately, I use the iPod mostly for listening to podcasts while lying on my daughter's bedroom floor at night.
