The Boss is on his way to Winona, and in a bit I'm headed that way myself. I needed a little coffee to get me going, though, so I stopped in here and made a pot that will hopefully last the weekend. I suspect the performance of this song is probably not going to be most folks' cup of tea, but I consider listening to at least one Son House song mandatory for anyone who claims to love rock & roll or American music in general (not to mention the blues). You can pretty much connect [...] A little something to rinse that stale candy taste out of your mouth. Recorded in Baden-Baden, West Germany, in 1962 as part of the very first American Folk Blues Festival. The German jazz giant Horst Lippmann promoted the annual festival, which functioned as a European tour featuring some of the all-time great blues musicians [...] Over the next three weeks I'll be bringing this run of Blue Monday to a close. What started out as a week's worth of interesting blues videos has sprawled into three months of Mondays (and I haven't even shown some of the videos I had originally selected). It's been fun sharing my enthusiasm [...] Every Saturday night I tune in to a community radio station that broadcasts out of the People's Republic. For four hours I'm treated to Rockin' John McDonald's I Like it Like That (mostly rare '50s and '60s rock & roll, soul, rockabilly, and surf) followed by Two for the Blues, billed as "Blues from [...] Whoever J.B. has backing him there, they really know how to play. Today just isn't a day for Blues, so let's hear instead from its sanctified cousin, Gospel. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Well, cross Kevin Kouzmanoff the list of potential solutions at third (that is, if he was ever on it). The A's got him (and a minor leaguer) last night, and the Friars got Scott Hairston back along with a 23 year old named Aaron Cunningham, who owns a .309./382/.493 slash line in 2124 minor [...] One beat up three-string guitar, one wooden box, and a whole hellva lot of awesome. And, if three strings are just two too many for you, there's a video of Steve playing his diddley bo (a 2x4 with one broom wire nailed on it), followed by a tune on the banjo, after the jump. Sonny Boy Williamson, harp; Willie Dixon, bass; Otis Spann, keys; Matt 'Guitar' Murphy, axe; and Bill Stepney, drums No, not that Charles Brown! Junior Wells with Buddy Guy on guitar and David Myers on bass in the film documentary Chicago Blues (1972). This is probably my all-time favorite version of this song. It might not fit some folks' definition of "blues music," but I personally just don't see how you can listen to those lyrics and come away with anything but the blues. RIP, Roy. Mrs. CH is making pancakes if anybody wants some. |
