1962 The Yankees completed a three-game sweep in Minnesota, winning 9-8 to regain first place. They remained there the rest of the way.
1969 Cesar Tovar hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the eighth inning, his first of the season, in a 4-3 victory over the Royals.
1970 Tony Oliva went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in an 8-6 victory over the A's.

This will be my last This Date in Twins History. I have a little too much on my plate right now to do this every day. I will continue with the game logs once a week. If someone would like to pick up the torch and carry it, I say go for it.

1987 The Twins blew a 7-0 lead after 6 1/2 innings to the Yankees in the Bronx. The Yankees scored seven runs in the seventh to tie it and five runs in the eighth to win 12-7. Former Twin Gary Ward hit a two-out, two-run single to tie it in the seventh and the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch by Juan Berenguer. Claudell Washington capped off the scoring with a three-run home run off Berenguer.
1995 The Twins traded pitcher Scott Erickson to the Orioles in exchange for pitcher Scott Klingenbeck and a player to be named. Ouch!
2004 Blanking the Royals 12-0, Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse helped to establish a club record by throwing the team's third consecutive shutout. Johan Santana (Royals, 4-0) and Brad Radke (Royals, 9-0) started the streak of 27 scoreless innings, also a franchise record. Crisian Guzman and Joe Mauer both had four hits for the Twins.

1962 The Yankees edged the Twins 7-5 in Bloomington, Minn., as Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris each hit a pair of home runs. The original M&M boys hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, off Camilo Pascual (12-4), the third time in four games they've hit back-to-back shots. New York is a half-game back of Cleveland.
1965 Jimmie Hall went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, and four RBIs and Mudcat Grant pitched an eight-hitter in a 9-0 victory over the Red Sox.
1972 The Twins fired manager Bill Rigney and promoted 33-year-old coach Frank Quilici to take his place.
1987 Frank Viola pitched a five-hitter at Yankee Stadium in a 2-0 Twins victory over Ron Guidry. Tom Brunansky and Kent Hrbek provided the offense with solo home runs.
1990 In his first start since losing a no-hitter, Andy Hawkins pitched 11 2/3 innings of shutout ball only to lose in the 12th 2-0 to the Twins in the first game of a doubleheader. Hawkins dropped to 1-6. Brian Harper and Gene Larkin had RBI singles in the 12th. The Yankees won the second game 5-3 after scoring three runs in the first inning off Roy Smith.
1991 The Twins trailed 4-0 after six innings but got a two-out, three-run home run from Brian Harper in the top of the seventh and a two-out, two-run homer from Kent Hrbek in the eighth in a 5-4 victory over the White Sox.
1995 The Red Sox obtained pitcher Rick Aguilera from the Twins in exchange for pitcher Frankie Rodriguez and a player to be named.
2008 The Twins trailed 3-1 after six innings to eventual Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, but got to him for three runs in the seventh for a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Denard Span's bases loaded walk with one out tied the game and Carlos Gomez's little dribbler to third base scored the go-ahead run.

1965 Dave Boswell and Jim Perry are winning pitchers as the Twins sweep a doubleheader from Red Sox by scores of 6-2 and 2-0 to move into first place for good. Perry pitched a seven-hitter in the second game.
1969 Minnesota regained the American League West lead behind the pitching of Jim Perry in a 13-1 rout of Oakland at Metropolitan Stadium. Perry pitched a five-hitter. Harmon Killebrew had two home runs and six RBIs and Tony Oliva and Leo Cardenas each had four hits.
1987 Kent Hrbek hit a walkoff home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Twins and Bert Blyleven a 4-3 victory over the Orioles.
2002 The Twins scored eight runs in the seventh inning to down the Mariners 8-4. Torii Hunter capped off the big inning with a go-ahead grand slam off Jeff Nelson.
2004 As a gesture to honor local military personnel, the Twins gave away a G.I. Joe action figure to the first 5,000 children attending a game against the Royals. The team, in an effort to appease protesting peace groups, who see the promotion as glorifying war, asks Hasbro, the toy’s maker, to remove the customary gun from G.I. Joe’s side, but the hand grenades remained visible. Brad Radke then went out and pitched a four-hitter in a 9-0 victory over the Royals. Nick Punto added his first home run as a Twin and only the second of his career.

1961 At Metropolitan Stadium, on the first Fourth of July in Minnesota with major league baseball, the Twins swept a pair from the White Sox, winning the opener 6-4 when Julio Becquer hit a ninth-inning grand slam as a pinch hitter. Cal McLish shut out the Twins in Game 2 until the eighth inning when the Twins scored four runs, two on Harmon Killebrew's only career inside-the-park home run. It was the Met's first inside-the-park home run. The Twins won 4-2 behind Jack Kralick.
1965 In a 5-2 victory over the A's, Camilo Pascual was forced to leave in the third inning with an injury. Pascual, who was 8-2 with a 3.06 ERA at the time, struggled the remainder of the season, making just nine starts and earning just one more victory. Tony Oliva gave the Twins a 3-2 lead with a two-out, three-run home run in the sixth and Harmon Killebrew added a two-run shot in the ninth. Johnny Klippstein earned the win with four perfect innings in relief. The victory kept the Twins tied for first place in the American League with the Indians (!).
1967 In Minnesota, the Twins swept a doubleheader from the Yankees. In Game 1, Mudcat Grant stopped the Yankees to give the Twins an 8-3 victory. Mickey Mantle drove in all three New York runs with two homers. Cesar Tovar had three doubles and three RBIs. In the second game, Al Worthington blew a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, but Tony Oliva singled in Tovar with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win.
1969 The Twins' Bob Miller was one out away from a shutout of the first-place A's before allowing three straight hits, including a three-run home run. Miller still got the final out for a 10-4 victory over Catfish Hunter that tied the Twins with the A's for first place.
1970 The Twins rallied to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the White Sox took the lead in the 12th when the runner scored all the way from first base on a wild throw to second base by pitcher Dick Woodson attempting to start an inning-ending double play. The batter went all the way to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly as the White Sox won 5-3. Despite the loss, the Twins still maintained a four-game lead over the Angels.
1973 Before 45,890 Twins fans, Eddie Bane, the top collegiate pitcher that year and Minnesota's top draft pick, made his major league debut against the Royals. Bane pitched well for seven innings, but the Royals emerged with a 5-4 win, beating reliever Ray Corbin. Bane finished the season at 0-5.
1974 Toby Harrah's third-inning homer was the only hit for Texas, as Bert Blyleven and the Twins won 3-1. Rod Carew went 0-for-4 to drop his batting average to .386.
1977 Paul Thormodsgard pitched a five-hitter and Mike Cubbage hit a grand slam in a 5-0 victory over the Brewers. Rod Carew went 0-for-3 with a walk to drop his batting average to .403.
1980 In the final Fourth of July game played at the Met (due to the strike the next season), the Twins blew a 3-0 lead and lost the game in the 12th when pitcher John Verhoeven threw away a pickoff throw which allowed the runner to advance to third base to set up the go-ahead sacrifice fly.
1982 In the first Fourth of July game at the Metrodome, the Twins' Gary Gaetti hit a walkoff home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning against the Blue Jays' Dave Stieb for a 4-3 victory. A meager 6,532 fans showed up to watch the last-place Twins (23-57), who were 23 games out of first place.
1984 Tippy Martinez saved the game for Dennis Martinez as the visiting Orioles beat the Twins 6-4. Despite the loss, the surprising Twins (40-40) remained in second place, just two games back of the first-place Angels. Rookie Kirby Puckett went 2-for-5 to improve his batting average to .337.
1987 Les Straker went seven strong innings, Kirby Puckett went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Kent Hrbek hit a two-run homer as the Twins beat the Orioles 4-1 to remain tied with the Royals for first place.
1988 Kent Hrbek hit two home runs including the go-ahead solo home run in the top of the ninth inning as the Twins beat the Brewers 3-1. Alan Anderson went eight innings and allowed no earned runs to improve his ERA to 2.83.
1991 The Twins' David West and two relievers combined on a three-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Jimmy Key and the Blue Jays. The lone run scored on a forceout in the second inning by backup catcher Junior Ortiz. The victory put the Twins in first place, one game ahead of the Angels.
1992 After allowing a run in the top of the 15th inning, the Twins won 3-2 on Chili Davis' two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 15th. The winning rally began with two outs and no one on base. The victory put the Twins in first place, one game ahead of the rival A's.
2002 John Olerud's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Mariners a 2-1 victory over the Twins. Despite the loss, the Twins remained in first place, 6.5 games ahead of the White Sox.
2003 Rick Reed pitched seven strong innings and Corey Koskie and Justin Morneau both homered as the Twins beat the Indians 9-2. It would be the Twins lone victory in a 13-game stretch that ended at the All-Star break that would see the Twins fall from a tie for first to 7.5 games back.
2006 The Royals stopped the Twins' 11-game winning streak emphatically, beating the Twins 7-2. It was just the Twins' second loss in 22 games. Despite the hot streak the Twins remained in third place, nine games behind the first-place Tigers.
2008 The Twins got a home run and four RBIs from both Nick Punto and Delmon Young in a 12-4 victory over the Indians. The victory got the Twins to within a half-game of the first place White Sox.

1968 Striking out 19 Twins and scattering six hits over 10 innings, Luis Tiant and the Indians won 1-0. Tiant set two modern MLB records - most strikeouts in a 10-inning game; 32 strikeouts in consecutive games - and tied the modern major league record of 41 strikeouts in three successive appearances. He topped the American League in ERA in 1968 with 1.60. Jim Merritt was the tough-luck loser for the Twins as he allowed only two hits through the first nine innings. In the 10th, he allowed an infield single to Lou Johnson, who advanced to second on an error by shortstop Cesar Tovar, who had just moved to shortstop after starting shortstop Jackie Hernandez had been removed for a pinch hitter in the top of the 10th. Joe Azcue then singled home Johnson to end the game. The Twins had runners at the corners and no outs in the 10th, but Tiant struck out Johnny Roseboro, Rich Rollins (pinch-hitting for Hernandez) and Merritt to get out of the jam. It was Merritt's fourth strikeout of the game.
1973 Minnesota's Tony Oliva hits three solo home runs during a 7-6 loss at Kansas City. The Twins' Bert Blyleven allowed a two-out RBI single to Steve Hovley in the eighth inning, but Oliva's third homer tied the game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. However, the Royals' eighth-place hitter, Paul Schaal, hit his second homer of the game off reliever Ken Sanders leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to end it.
1980 Ken Landreaux tied the modern major league record with three triples in Minnesota's 10-3 win over Texas. Doug Flynn will match it in a month.
1987 After Jeff Reardon blew a two-run lead in the top of the ninth inning on Larry Sheets' two-out, two-run single, the Twins won it 6-5 in the 11th inning on Steve Lombardozzi's two-out single that scored Tom Brunansky.
2006 After the Royals rallied with four runs on two hits off Johan Santana in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead, the Twins rallied back with three runs on one hit against the Royals' bullpen to win 6-5. Two walks, a single, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch preceded Angel Berroa's three-run double in the Royals' big sixth inning. The Twins' three runs in the eighth scored on Justin Morneau's RBI single and two run-scoring wild pitches by Ambiorix Burgos.

1972 Minnesota's Jim Kaat, sporting a 10-2 record and a 2.07 ERA, broke his pitching hand while sliding. He missed the remainder of the season. Kaat got credit for the 6-4 win over the White Sox. Tom Bradley won his 10th in the nitecap, a 2-1 win for Chicago. If Kaat had not gotten injured during probably his most dominant season, would he be in the Hall of Fame now?
1987 Jim Eisenreich, making a comeback after being forced out of the major leagues by a nervous disorder in 1984, hit his first ML home run since 1982 to lead the Royals to a 10-3 win over his former club, the Twins. Eisenreich also added a double and four RBIs.
2006 Rookie sensation Francisco Liriano pitched eight shutout innings in an 8-0 victory over the Brewers to improve to 9-1 with a 1.99 ERA. Liriano allowed only three hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts.
2007 With manager Joe Torre watching from the Yankee dugout, Roger Clemens threw eight innings of two-hit ball in a 5-1 win over the Twins to become the eighth pitcher to record 350 career victories. The New York manager was the catcher for Warren Spahn's 350th win making him a participant of the only two occasions that a pitcher has reached the milestone since 1928.

1961 Harmon Killebrew went 4-for-5 with five RBIs in a 9-3 victory over the Kansas City Athletics. Killebrew's grand slam in the ninth inning broke open a close game.
1969 Rich Reese went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and three RBIs to lead the Twins, who rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to win 10-5 over the White Sox.
1973 At California, the Twins' Jim Kaat fired a one-hitter to beat the Angels, 2-1. Frank Robinson's home run in the second inning was the only hit. The Twins' Rod Carew had a two-run single in the third inning.
1984 Minnesota's Frank Viola pitched a four-hitter in a 9-0 victory in front of 53,484 at Detroit. Kent Hrbek had three hits, including a homer and four RBIs. The victory gave the surprising second-place Twins (38-39) a split of their four-game series with the Tigers (55-22).
2006 Both Shannon Stewart and Jason Kubel had four hits as the Twins rallied to beat the Brewers 10-7. Michael Cuddyer's RBI triple tied the game in the eighth inning. Later in the inning, Shannon Stewart walked with the bases loaded to reach base for the fifth time in the game and give the Twins the lead. Kubel then followed with a two-run single to give him three RBIs.

1965 Fred Newman pitched a two-hitter as the Angels beat the Twins 5-0. Going into the ninth inning, Newman had no strikeouts and had induced 19 groundball outs from the Twins. Newman then struck out Rich Rollins looking and Zoilo Versalles swinging before getting his 20th groundout from Sandy Valdespino to end the game.
1987 Bert Blyleven was leading 3-0 with two outs and no one on base in the ninth inning before he allowed consecutive singles to the Royals' Bo Jackson and pinch hitter Thad Bosley. Jamie Quirk then reached on an error to make it 3-1 and closer Jeff Reardon replaced Blyleven. Reardon allowed an infield single to Willie Wilson to load the bases before getting Kevin Seitzer to end the game and leave George Brett in the on-deck circle. After the game, there were nasy rumors that Blyleven didn't want to complete the game bad enough and was looking at the bullpen, but I'm sure they were just rumors.
1991 Jack Morris pitched a six-hitter in a 3-0 victory over Jack McDowell and the White Sox that ended the Twins' four-game losing streak.
1995 At the Metrodome, Indians designated hitter Eddie Murray collected his 3,000th career hit off Twins right-hander Mike Trombley in the sixth inning to become the 20th player to accomplish the feat. 'Steady Eddie' joined Pete Rose as only the second switch-hitter to reach the milestone. The Indians beat the Twins 4-1.
1996 The Twins defeated the Royals 5-2 as Minnesota LF Marty Cordova had his hitting streak stopped at 23 games. Twins rookie Matt Lawton hit a grand slam for his third career home run.

1969 Tony Oliva collected eight consecutive hits in the Twins' doubleheader split with the Royals. Kansas City took the opener 7-2 behind homers by Mike Fiore and Bob Oliver. Oliva flied out his first time up, then stroked three singles. In the Twins' 12-2 win in Game 2, Oliva hit two homers, a double and two singles, driving in five runs.
1984 Twins rookie Andre David hit a two-run home run off Jack Morris in his first major league at-bat to spark Minnesota to a 5-3 win over Detroit before 44,619. It is the only home run David will hit in the big leagues and stopped Morris' 11-game win streak over the Twins. Detroit won the nitecap, 7-5, as Kirk Gibson started the scoring with a two-run homer in the first and ended it with a two-run homer in the ninth. The Tigers also scored in the second on back-to-back homers by Chet Lemon and Rupert Jones.
1989 Padres general manager Jack McKeon traded his son-in-law, pitcher Greg Booker, to the Twins for pitcher Freddie Toliver. Booker had been booed in every appearance but will make just six appearances for the Twins before being sold to the Giants at the end of the season. Toliver will get in nine games with no decisions.
1991 In an 8-4 loss to the White Sox, the Twins' Kirby Puckett collected his 1,500th career hit, off winner Greg Hibbard. Scott Erickson was the loser, ending his 12-game win streak.
2008 The Twins' Kevin Slowey pitched a three-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Ben Sheets and the Brewers. Slowey struck out eight and walked none in a game that lasted 2 hours, 5 minutes.

1992 The Twins scored 10 runs on nine hits and two walks in the fourth inning as Minnesota rumbled by Oakland for the third straight game 10-2 to leave the two teams tied in the American League West at 43-31. Scott Erickson won over Kevin Campbell. Kirby Puckett and Greg Gagne homered for the Twins.
1998 The Twins' Bob Tewksbury slowed down Mark McGwire, twice retiring him with a 44-mph lob. McGwire grounded out in the first inning swinging at a lob, and then with a 0-2 count in the fourth, popped out to first on another. Tewksbury also retired Ray Lankford in the sixth on a lob. The Twins won 3-2 when Otis Nixon drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a squeeze bunt.
2006 The Twins' Joe Mauer went 2-for-3 in a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers to finish 11-for-13 in the three-game sweep to raise his batting average to .392, his high-water mark for the season. Mauer would hit .303 for the remainder of the season, but it was good enough for his first batting title, the first for an American League catcher.
2007 Frank Thomas hit a three-run homer off Twins pitcher Carlos Silve in the first inning of the Blue Jay's 8-5 loss at the Metrodome to become the 21st major leaguer to hit 500 home runs. The 'Big Hurt', who had hit 50 homers (10% ) against the Twins, also hit his first home run of his career in Minnesota in 1990.

1965 The Twins twice blow eighth-inning leads but still manage to sweep a doubleheader from the Tigers by scores of 6-4 and 6-5. In Game 1, Don Mincher hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Twins the lead right back, and in Game 2, Joe Nossek hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Twins the sweep.
1970 Rookie Bert Blyleven pitched a two-hitter in the Twins' 9-1 victory over the White Sox. After allowing a single to the leadoff batter, Blyleven retired 22 of the next 23 before allowing a solo home run to Bob Spence with one out in the eighth inning. Blyleven struck out eight and walked one.
1972 Nolan Ryan (8-5) triples and scores the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as California beat the Twins, 3-1. Poor base running in the fourth didn't help the Twins' cause: With Harmon Killebrew on third base and Steve Braun on second with no outs, Jim Nettles flied out to Spencer in left field. Killebrew faked a dash to the plate and Braun started from second. A relay caught Braun at second and another throw nipped Killebrew at third for a triple play.
1973 David Clyde, 18 and fresh out of Houston's Westchester High School, made his eagerly awaited debut with the Rangers, before 35,698, the largest Rangers crowd of the year. Clyde, the No. 1 pick in the draft, walked the first two Twins he faces, then got Bobby Darwin, George Mitterwald and Joe Lis on swinging third strikes. Clyde went five innings and gave up only one hit - a two-run home run - walked seven and struck out eight. He was the winner 4-3.
1991 The Blue Jays scored their only run when the Twins' Shane Mack misplayed a line drive in left field for an error that allowed Kelly Gruber to score from first base in the fourth inning and the Blue Jays, behind rookie Juan Guzman, hold on for a 1-0 victory.
2006 Joe Mauer went 5-for-5 to give him nine hits in two games in a 9-2 victory over the Dodgers. Francisco Liriano gave up two earned runs in seven innings on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks to improve to 8-1.
2008 Joe Mauer hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Twins a dramatic 7-6 victory over the Brewers. Brian Buscher had tied the score in the seventh with a two-out RBI single off left-handed reliever Brian Shouse. Buscher's hit came just after Michael Cuddyer had been thrown out trying to score on a single by Delmon Young.

1964 Twins pitcher Gerry Arrigo just missed a no-hitter when Chicago's Mike Hershberger lined a single to center field to lead off the ninth inning, as the Twins beat the White Sox 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Arrigo tossed another one-hitter while pitching for the Reds.
1971 The Brewers' Marty Pattin gave up 11 hits to the Twins but still shut them out 5-0. Leo Cardenas, Rod Carew and Tony Oliva accounted for seven of the 11 hits.
1977 On Jersey Day in Minnesota, every fan received a jersey with No. 29 on it, Rod Carew's number. Rod Carew responded by going 4-for-5, scoring five runs, and raising his average to .403. One of the hits was a two-run home run as he finished with four RBIs. Teammate Glenn Adams drove in eight as the Twins beat the White Sox 19-12. Maybe the next time the White Sox come to town, the Twins should give away No. 7 jerseys.
1985 Minnesota's Ken Schrom one-hit Kansas City, but needed a two-run single from Roy Smalley in the bottom of the ninth off Dan Quisenberry to secure the 2-1 victory. Willie Wilson's third-inning single was the only Royals hit. The lone Royals run came in the first inning when Lonne Smith walked, went to third on a wild pickoff throw, and scored on a wild pitch.
2006 Joe Mauer went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, and five RBIs in an 8-2 victory over the Dodgers.

1965 One out away from a complete-game victory, Tigers pitcher Dave Wickersham walked the Twins' Harmon Killebrew and Don Mincher to put the winning run at first base and was pulled from the game. Bernie Allen then greeted reliever Fred Gladding with a single to score pinch runner Jim "Mudcat" Grant with the tying run as both runners moved up a base on the throw home. After pinch hitter Rich Rollins was intentionally walked, pinch hitter Joe Nossek singled to give the Twins a dramatic 4-3 victory.
2003 After the Twins fell behind 5-1 early to the White Sox, Jacque Jones hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to tie it and a walkoff homer in the 11th to give the Twins a 6-5 victory.
